Tan Malaka used his primary school education to improve his fluency in Dutch and was able to read and write in both languages. In 1929, he graduated from the University with a master's degree in The Hague. After receiving his degree, he went on to study law at the University of Vienna where he earned an LL.M. (Master of Laws). After finishing his studies, Tan Malaka returned to Indonesia where he worked as an advocate for Indonesians living overseas during the Japanese colonial era. He was even jailed for his involvement. He was released after eighteen months, but was arrested again not long after that. During the Japanese occupation, Tan Malaka became a member of the Gerwani organization of Indonesia. This organization had the goal of improving the lives of Indonesian women. He served as chairman of this group and advocated for Indonesian independence daily. In 1945, Tan Malaka was released and continued his work as an advocate and politician for Indonesians after the Dutch left.In 1946, he helped establish a political party called Partindo (Partai Indonesia) and he ran as a candidate in the Constituent Assembly representing East Java Province in 1950. Later on that year though, his party disbanded.
